Artists are independent creatures (sometimes to the extreme!). We like to work and learn our own way flipping through beloved art books. The reality is we are the biggest booklovers you'll find! That's because the best way to learn and analyze the methods used by master painters and draftsmen is through drawing books and painting books. Spending quality time with great art resources and the best art books for process is something that, by and large, all artists have in common to some extent.

But not all art books are made alike, and artists definitely have a discerning eye. We look for gorgeous images, process shots that show us how an artist creates a certain effect from beginning to end, and we want to hear from a reliable source—a fellow artist. One of my favorite drawing books is Mastering Sketching by Judy Martin because the author is coming from a position of experience, being an artist herself. The first time I had the sketching tutorial in my hand I spent almost an hour just looking at the works used to illustrate the book. And then I got to the lessons, which inspired me to develop my own drawing language and style (still in the works!), but the inclination to continue drawing is there and going strong, and it all came to me with a turn of a page.
