Art DVDs and Videos

There are so many exceptional art DVDs and art videos today that I can't tell you the last time I learned an oil painting technique or portrait painting lesson in an actual brick and mortar classroom or art workshop. And I don't feel deprived because there are so many advantages to having this kind of one-on-one painting lesson with an artist, even if we are separated by a TV or computer screen.

For one, I don't have to crane my neck to see the up-close shots of an artist working on his or her canvas. The camera is pointed right there, and it's so clear that I can see every stroke being made. If I miss a painting tip or part of the painting demo, I don't have to do without. I can rewind to my heart's content and see any part of the art lesson as many times as I want.

Plus I can learn at my own convenience. Life is super busy for all of us, and being able to learn valuable oil painting instruction on my own time when I'm ready, focused, and able to get the most out of the video painting lessons—and not according to someone else's timetable—is my best recipe for success.
Now I consider resources like art DVDs and videos as some of my most important painting supplies. I can watch them while I'm working—sort of like a paint-along exercise—or I can review them in advance of going into the studio to paint or draw. That way I can distill what I've seen and utilize the painting tips and techniques in an unrestricted way. Whatever way I choose, there's really no compromising my artistic learning because of the great art instruction and visual play-by-plays I receive in these video guides.
