I enjoyed watching Ron paint and hearing his problem solving process. I enjoyed Ron's thoughts as he moved from start to finish. Thanks Ron.
Not the best painting DVD, but not the worst either...

While agreeing with some comments of the other two reviewers, I can’t completely dismiss Hick’s video as useless - even if all you gain is one small nugget of information, it can never be useless. Yes, it is lacking in content and could have been about 30 minutes longer, with more demonstration/explanation of exactly how he paints, but almost all painting videos I’ve previously viewed have something lacking with them. This is not a video for beginners, but for at least an intermediate painter who is exploring different styles and finish to their work. I’m assuming that most people who purchase Hick’s DVD do so because they admire his work. Hicks has a unique style and a nice, loose approach to his finish that maybe others would like to emulate. I think the DVD shows how he achieves this, but it stumbles along the way and doesn’t transition well enough step-by-step, sometimes seeming like the DVD was overly compressed and skipped segments.
Again - I wish it had been longer and also showed the finished painting in full view at the end. I also wish he would skip the portrait demonstration and produce a DVD while painting one of his figurative canvases next time - this is his forte, and what he excels at doing. Not the best painting DVD out there, but not the worst by a long shot. Hopefully, Hicks will learn from this one, and his next DVD will be much stronger in content.

spent almost the entire time in the side view of him at the painting talking about his thoughts. No instruction or how he applied the thoughts. would break away and show the painting in stages but you missed him applying the strokes. he would talk about what he did or what he wants to do but little showing him doing it. most of the the thoughts were very general. ie the portrait is showing light from top to bottom... duh. said that a hundred times. like him as an artist, a teacher he is not. rambles a lot in his thoughts.... can also be difficult to understand.

A disappointment. Supposed to be instructional. Only states his philosophy when painting. Doesn't even name paints on his palette and logic behind his choice. Doesn't tell mixtures he uses during various stages of the painting. Save your money. This is the only Interweave DVD that I have not liked.
