I became a fan of Mary Whyte after attending a watercolor workshop several years ago. What I learned at that workshop has inspired me to continue working to find my own voice in watercolor. I recently purchased the "Mastering Watercolor Portraiture with Mary Whyte" DVD. In the DVD, I found the same masterful teaching techniques that I had found in the workshop sessions. For those seeking a non-mechanical approach, Mary's uninhibited, natural teaching style will leave you with a world of information and techniques that will enrich your own artistic knowledge base and leave you wanting to try them all. Cons:
I watched Mary Whyte's DVD first, and couldn't wait to try her technique. She says it's a sketch, but if I could do what she does on this video, I think I'd feel it was a finished portrait. She caught the model's features but also his silent personality. I would love to see her make a DVD with what she would term a "finished portrait". I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
