Crochet Books

My crochet books line the shelves of my bookcase and wait in stacks and piles around its base. Three months ago I bought a new, larger bookcase to house my growing collection of crochet pattern books and reference books, and already I am out of room. So it’s either buy another bookcase or stop collecting crochet books. I’ll start looking for that next bookshelf immediately.

There are several reasons I am drawn to crochet books. We all have a favorite designer or three, and a collection of their patterns (whether softbound or in eBook format) presents a multitude of choices for that next great project. Books are also a great way to learn a new technique. One of my favorite crochet pattern books is Robyn Chachula’s Blueprint Crochet: Modern Designs for the Visual Crocheter. Before I purchased this book, I had only passing knowledge about stitch diagrams. As a visual learner, I had been drawn to Robyn’s patterns and their stitch diagrams in the past, but Blueprint Crochet challenged me to really understand the genius of stitch diagrams, while at the same time providing written text and construction diagrams so that a pattern never leaves me lost.

And two well-loved volumes, prickling with a multitude of colored notes and markers, never seem to make their way back to the bookshelf before they are needed once again. The Harmony Guides Basic Crochet Stitches and Harmony Guides Crochet Stitch Motfs are my go-to stitch dictionaries. Whether I am designing a simple baby blanket or washcloth or creating an elaborate sweater design, my design begins with one of the pages marked within these crochet instruction books.
