Granny square socks using crochet and knit techniques

Her grandmother only crochets, her mother only knits, but this designer does both! Hence the name she chose for these socks, a project that combines both techniques. Hand-painted merino yarn provides a contemporary touch to the traditional granny square motif.
Finished Size: 8 1/2" (21.5 cm) in circumference; 8 3/4" (22 cm) long from heel to toe to fit a woman's size medium foot.
Yarn: Koigu Premium Merino (KPM), (100% merino wool; 170 yd (160 m)/3 1/2 oz [50 g]): #2398 medium gray (MC), 2 skeins. Koigu Premium Painter's Palette Merino (KPPPM), (100% merino wool; 170 yd (160 m)/3 1/2 oz [50 g]): # P214 purple (A), and #P710 light sage (B), 1 skein each.
Yarn weight: #1 - Super Fine
Gauge: Crochet: One granny square = 3 x 3" (7.5 x 7.5 cm). Knit: 30 sts and 46 rows = 4" (10 cm) in St st worked in the round.
Needles:Size 1 1/2 (2.5 mm): set of 5 double-pointed knitting needles. Adjust needle size as necessary to obtain the correct gauge.
Hooks: Size C/2 (2.75 mm). Adjust hook size as necessary to obtain the correct gauge.
Notions: Tapestry needle; stitch markers (optional).
