Join award-winning art quilter Jamie Fingal to learn her approach to making a quilt with unconventional materials...the rebel way! Jamie incorporates many different kinds of fabrics into her artwork, and on this DVD she demonstrates just how successfully they can be fused and used in fun and imaginative ways. Jamie guides viewers through the process of determining the best color palette choices, and she offers an in-depth exploration of design while working with several basic geometric shapes. While learning Jamie’s approach, viewers will see her work progress into a 4-panel piece, in which the sections are separated by a variety of trims, including zippers. The DVD includes a section on free-motion machine quilting, with Jamie demonstrating how she quilts the panels and how she adds the trims. Final details are added, the backing is attached, and Jamie shares her unusual (and simple) addition of hanging tabs. • Wool-blended felt (35% wool, 65% rayon, 36" wide): black as the foundation, red for the backing (From the black I cut 4 panels 6" x 16".)
• Fabrics for the background, cut about 1/8" smaller than the felt pieces (I used 2 purples and 2 greens.)
• Fabrics for appliqué (a selection of cottons, batiks, sheers, and silk)
• Papers (optional, for use in appliqué design)
• Fusible web (I use Mistyfuse® in white and ultraviolet—for use with sheer fabrics.)
• Teflon® sheets or parchment paper (I use Mistyfuse Fat Goddess Sheets®.)
• Iron (dry)
• Ironing surface
• Spray bottle
• Scissors, 8" and snips (I use Havel’s scissors; they have a ridge that is helpful for fussy cutting shapes.)
• Rotary cutter, mat, and ruler (I use a heavy-duty, double-sided, self-healing cutting mat and no-slip ruler from Martelli Notions.)
• Trims, a variety (I love black and silver.)
• Zipper(s)
• Sewing machine with free-motion quilting capabilities
• Thread for machine quilting (I use 40-wt. black polyester in the needle and bobbin.)
