Q&A with Stitch Editor Tricia Waddell

QA: Tricia, I noticed on the cover that this issue promises 30 sewing projects for fall.  Can you give us a sneak peek of what kinds of projects we can expect?

TW:  It’s a packed issue with everything from home décor projects featuring fabrics from around the world to romantic and feminine wearable accessories showcasing sheer fabrics.  You’ll also find fantastic fall projects using all types of wool from clothing to home to gifts, plus quick-to-sew wearable accessories to dress up an outfit.  There are also lots of sewing tips and tricks for working with tricky fabrics to ensure your projects turn out as planned. 

QA: As we move into fall, people are also looking ahead to the holidays.  What kinds of holiday gifts are hot for the sewing artist?

QA:  It's interesting that you have a global theme for this issue and a feature on Japanese projects.  What new creative influences are coming from this part of the world?

TW: Japanese craft trends have taken the sewing world by storm! Now that Japanese craft books are more readily available, sewists are really inspired by the innovative  elements of Japanese style and it’s showing up  in clothing,  quilting, and small gift projects.  From kimonos and traditional Asian style to unique surface designs like sashiko and shibori,  from classic avant garde fashion like Issey Miyake to the undeniable cuteness of zakka, not to mention the unique clothing construction found in contemporary Japanese sewing books, you’ll love our feature on the inspiration coming from this trend-setting country.

QA:  Working with sheer fabrics can be challenging.  Are there any tips or tricks in sewing them?

TW: Yes, first, don’t be afraid to sew with them!  If you choose simple projects with minimal design details you’ll have great success.  Since you can see all the inner construction details, take your time when sewing and pressing.  We have several projects to get you started plus a step-by-step tutorial on the proper seams to use with sheers.

QA:  This is the third issue of Stitch and it's 148 pages!  Did you anticipate that there would be such a renewed and growing interest in sewing?

TW: Actually yes!  Sewing is such a phenomenal way to express your own unique personal style. And with all the beautiful fabrics available these days, how can anyone resist! Our theme this issue is Sew Global, because sewing inspiration can be found truly everywhere.
