What’s the difference between woolen and worsted spinning? IS there a difference? How do you decide when to use what method? Why should a spinner care? The questions are legion, the answers sometimes confusing. Here to make common sense out of it all is Abby Franquemont, who has been spinning since she was five years old. You'll learn: - The short forward draw (worsted) and what kinds of fibers it’s best for. - The backward long draw (woolen) and what kinds of fibers to choose it for. - Two hybrid drafting methods, including spinning from the fold. - Important extras such as making good worsted joins and spinning ergonomics. - And last but not least, what happens when you give two kittens the run of a spinning studio. The result? You’ll be comfortable with a wide range of drafting methods, and you will have developed a sense of when and how to use them with different fiber preparations. It’s all part of becoming an accomplished spinner, and making the yarn you want.

I just watched this video and enjoyed it tremendously. I've been spinning for a few years and still learned quite a bit from this video. Very well done. Amy Franquemort knows what she is talking about and it shows. The camera work was good. I just wish the contrast between her lap cloth and the yarn she is spinning was a bit better, but that's not enough of a problem for me not giving it a 5 star rating.
Drafting: The Long and Short of It

I rated this 3 stars because I think it's average. Yes, it's clear that Abby knows what she is teaching, but I don't think the visuals are very clear. Sometimes it's hard to see the details and I think presentation could have been better and a pet bug of mine, not talking to the camera but off to the side.
Frankly, I found it a little boring and have had to watch it in bits and pieces as I just kept loosing interest.
Having said that, I understand that it's one of the first of this type of video production so kudos for that I just think that there is better available.
Sorry to be negative, I tried to love it like everyone else but I should have watched it before the others available here.
I just returned from SAFF with a renewed zeal for getting out of my default yarn comfort zone. I was so pleased with the level of detail that Abby goes into about the differences between the different drafting methods. This was just what I needed to start thinking more holistically about the yarn I want to make.
I just downloaded this yesterday, but already I''ve watched it twice. Very well made, demos are clear, and Abby is a great teacher and speaker. I heartily recommend this video! Well worth the price.
Really is everything you want to know about drafting!

I'm really impressed at the amount of knowledge Abby shared on this topic of drafting fiber, which helped to understand why I would use one method over another for a certain fiber to yield a certain type of yarn. I learned a lot from Abby because she explained everything so well - why she did things in a certain way and how that affects the fiber and yarn. I realized what I had been spinning (worsted vs woolen vs something in-between) and really understood what she meant.
Before, I only really knew about the short forward draw and the long draw, but she introduces other methods in-between that opens up a whole world of possibilities for spinning. For people who complained about the direct download videos being of poor quality, I believe the pixelation only happens if your computer is too slow (not enough memory to play to the video) or you need to get video codecs to upgrade your video player. I had no problems at all with the quality. 2 thumbs up for this great tutorial :)
