There is a sense of magic and wonder in color—finding crimson in a drab insect, pairing two unexpected colors for a stunning result, growing cotton in green instead of the expected white, turning an ugly piece beautiful with a single dip in the dyebath. But, as crafters and fiber artists all know, working with color can be intimidating and frustrating. Colorways gives you the tools to experiment with, practice, and ultimately master using color in your work.

Combining the excitement of discovery with the satisfaction of practice, Colorways lets you:

  • Learn new skills for dyeing and applying color
  • Explore ethnic color traditions from around the world
  • Meet extraordinary teachers and fiber artists

From natural plant dyes of the Mexican highlands, to sun prints using persimmon juice from Japan, to the natural colors available in cotton; the articles, videos, and photographs in Colorways present a breathtaking spectrum to use in fiber, yarn, and cloth.

Color has rich historical roots, and Colorways explores the techniques and traditions used around the world while showing you how to try these traditions for yourself through:

  • 3 step-by-step dyeing tutorials (as PDF downloads)
  • 13 videos
  • 7 slide shows
  • 10 interactive in-depth articles

From choosing colored fiber through adding color to finished cloth, this eMag will help you gain the confidence to experiment with all forms of color in textiles!

Explore the world of color in textiles and learn new ways of adding color to your own work.

1. So what is Colorways?
Colorways is a dynamic digital product called an eMag that you can download onto your computer and enjoy on or offline. It requires a simple software application called Adobe® Air® that’s easy to use and is installed on your computer automatically the first time you install an Interweave eMag.

Colorways includes articles, videos, gallery slideshows, hyperlinks to inspiring and informative websites, and so much more. With just the click of your mouse, you can watch video interviews and tutorials, view slideshows that let you zoom in to see more, and navigate easily around the eMag.

2. What is the editorial focus of Colorways?
Colorways gives you the tools to experiment with, practice, and ultimately master using color in your work. Combining the excitement of discovery with the satisfaction of practice, Colorways lets you:

  • Learn new skills for dyeing and applying color
  • Explore ethnic color traditions from around the world

3. How is it different from the digital editions of Handwoven Magazine® or Spin-Off Magazine®?
Colorways is an entirely unique product, separate from our print magazines. Unlike the digital editions of Handwoven® or  Spin-Off®, which are exact digital replications of the print editions, Colorways was developed to provide a multi-media experience, a digital environment that lets you see color artists in action, fibers at the source, and all the fine details of fiber arts. It includes videos, slideshows with zoom options that let you zero in on interesting details, color recipes that can be downloaded and printed, links to useful information and products, and other interactive features.

4. Will Colorways be available as a print magazine?
Because this was built as a digital product, it will not be printed as a traditional magazine; however, you can certainly print each of the pages. In fact, we hope you will! For instance, you’ll want to print the materials lists and color recipes to stick in your bag the next time you go to your local fiber store.

5. Will the availability of Colorways mean that Handwoven Magazine® or Spin-Off Magazine® will stop printing?
Absolutely not! Colorways is an entirely separate product, produced in addition to the Spin-Off® and Handwoven® publications.

6. Does the Colorways eMag require a subscription?
No. Colorways is a stand-alone product similar to Interweave special print issues. Anyone can purchase it without a subscription of any kind.

I LOVED this eMag! I am very partial to the Interweave eMags in general because of their unique, in-depth, and well-presented content, but Colorways just blew them all out of the water. I bought it as soon as it came out and have gone through it several times in its entirety. I am a knitter, spinner, crocheter, and dyer, and I think this eMag would be great for anyone who is passionate about fibre arts. I can't wait for the next issue!

I am a knitter but bought this issue of Colorways out of curiosity. It was a serendipitous find. Inside is a treasure trove of information on natural dyes from cochineal to kakishibu with links to the suppliers. There are videos that explain techniques for using these dyes. All very clear and informative. This magazine is now one of my treasures!

I am not done with it yet but I wanted to encourage folks to consider buying the Colorways product by Interweave. Why am I not done? Because I keep discovering gizmos that show me more detail each time I "page" thru Colorways. The content is fabulous. I really don't think their ad does justice to the content. I hope there are more indepth emags! The content itself addresses many regions and dyes. The natural dye process lends itself to the slideshows and videos to describe the nuances of working around the dyepot. Interweave describes it as an emag and I find it fascinating. They have combined regular publication pages with slideshows and videos of the artists talking about their culture, design process and the dye process itself. It takes awhile (at least it took me awhile) to get a grip on all the ways you can view the content. It is truly a glimpse of the future and how fiber art can be presented well in an electronic package. You purchase the emag and then you download an adobe add on that drives the emag. I'm not sure if it works on an ipad or tablet device but it looks worthy of one. Enjoy! Deb Mc
