Andean Knitting with Nilda Callañaupa Alvarez

Nilda Callañaupa Alvarez learned from one of the last traditional knitters in her village in the highlands of Peru. Since then the skills and styles of Andean knitting have been revived in Nilda’s community and throughout the world.

Join Nilda in a workshop that traces the traditions, techniques, and tools of knitting in the Andean Highlands. Focusing on the region’s beautiful and distinctive chullo hats, Nilda demonstrates Andean knitting step by step, including:

  • Three methods for creating the scalloped punta edging
    Spacer 15x15 pixels
  • Tricks for managing three or more colors in stranded knitting
    Spacer 15x15 pixels
  • How to work in the round from the inside of the piece

Nilda also talks with Interweave's founder, Linda Ligon, about the cultural significance of Andean knitting: what items are traditionally knitted and by whom, how patterns and variations indicate the origin of a knitted piece, and where chullos and other handknits are typically worn.

Learn the history and skills of Andean knitting with this video, then practice the techniques in your own knitting with the included PDF.

Interesting but very limited in scope. Review by Peter

I had hoped that the video would cover more than the techniques used to knit the decorative edging of children's caps. I was looking for information on the use of 'yarn round the neck' techniques but unfortunately that only occurs in neighbouring areas and was not mentioned.

Very interesting, but a download is undependable Review by Kate

I also found less time than expected devoted to techniques, but those covered were very clear and useful -- plus more options for features like "puntas". My biggest regret is buying the download version instead of a DVD -- it doesn't run well on any of my computers.

overpriced Review by knitter

My expectation for this product didn't match what I received. The quality was exceptional, but the amount of time devoted to technique was much shorter than I thought it would be and I'm not sure I would have paid so much had I known. I could have purchased a whole book for $30.
