Patterns for weaving, embroidery, needlepoint, and other textile crafts have been published in Europe since the advent of the printing press in the sixteenth century. As early as 1526, a German publisher printed patterns on a gridded background. Up until the nineteenth century, these patterns were scarce, and most designs were created by popular painters of the time.
