In this issue, we share with you altered photographs of courageous readers who embellished themselves to reveal their true (and whimsical) souls (page 71). And if we asked our readers to expose humorous depictions of themselves, we couldn’t leave out members of our own cast and crew (see page 7).
There is a luscious banquet of artful techniques in this issue that we hope you’ll find tempting, beginning with Karen Selk’s detailed article on the silk fusion process—such instant gratification and results so gorgeous I’m thoroughly addicted (I’ve made more than 20 silk fusion pieces already). Kim Grant’s article on demystifying mixed-media collage (page 26) is so helpful, you may never be stumped again when it comes to figuring out how to layer colors and ephemera to create stunning collages. Or, if making or altering books are your passion, have a look at Wanda McCullough’s “C.C. Modes” book and construction or Nina Bagley’s vintage recipe tome.
If you’re stumped at the moment and can’t think of what to make, find a local flea market and take our Vintage Textile Flea Market Challenge (page 76), where we dare you to spend $25 on cast-off finds, then spend one evening fashioning them into an artful treasure. I have found these timed challenges to be the best kinds of catalysts to jumpstart my brainstorming when I’m feeling blocked.
Lastly, we share with you some of the eye-popping results from our brag book challenge (page 78). I can’t begin to express how moved our staff was when we opened journal after journal of your amazing, powerful brags. I hope all of you will keep documenting every proud moment. Embrace each artful, precious minute of your life and fly!
