    About the Author

Kathy Merrick is a fiber artist with more than 30 years of experience crocheting and knitting. She has worked with Liz Prior Lucy, Kaffe Fassett, and Brandon Mably, all of whom have been significant influences on her designs and interest in color. She has had many designs published in Interweave Crochet magazine, including the very popular Babette Blanket, and she is profiled in the Spring 2008 issue. She lives in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania.

    Details

"It is clear that color wizards Kaffe Fassett and Brandon Mably now have a successor, and a very worthy one at that. Majoring in crochet, designer Merrick has created a book that veterans and novice stitchers will keep at their immediate beck and call, boasting exquisite patterns, subtle colors, precise directions (in symbols and in words), color photographs that encourage trial and experimentation and tips, and techniques that result in professional garments. Most important is her espousal of color, color everywhere; in the first chapter, the author thankfully avoids the timeworn color wheel, instead suggesting selecting then combining different colors of embroidery floss to understand how the hues blend and contrast (an exercise that also saves serious dollars on unwanted yarn). Chapters are organized sequentially, in order of color complexity, starting with one or two shades, progressing to stripes and color blocks, and ending with color adventures. The 17 projects are amazingly seductive; how to choose between a Milanese style pleated hat or a tropical stripe wrap or a Joseph-like coat of color blocks? And after even a preliminary glance who could argue with Merricks autobiographical introduction: I am a color junkie and a magpie. Barbara Jacobs

    Booklist STARRED REVIEW

"It is spectacular. I doubt I'll be accused of exaggeration when I say that each project is more gorgeous than the last, and all of them are marvelous."--Carol Sulcoski, author of
    Knitting Socks with Handpainted Yarn

"When someone of this reputation finally publishes her first solo book, it's cause for anticipation and maybe a bit of angst over whether such high standards can be maintained. Have no fear, Kathy fans: her superior design abilities shine in this stunning book."--Crochet Insider

"Any book on color that kicks off with a dedication thanking, among others, color-wheel masters like Kaffe Fassett, Brandon Mably and Koigu's Landra clan is off to a good start"--

"If you aren't very brave with colour, then this is a great book to boost your confidence and get you working with more vibrant shades."--Inside Crochet Magazine (UK)

Cute patterns, not enough info on color selection Review by Cathy
    Rating

This is a nice book with some really cute patterns that lend well to experimenting with color. A good set of color changing techniques and glossary.

I was somewhat disappointed that there was very little info on color pairing and selecting colors. No color wheel or information on complimentary colors. There are 2 pages that talk about color experimentation and you are told to experiment with colors till you find something you like.
