Description

This striped, double-breasted vest was inspired by several seen in the BBC production of Sense and Sensibility. I was drawn to the more narrow overlap of double-breasted garments of the time, and my husband appreciated the straight bottom edge—no pesky points to rearrange after sitting down! The stripes and tweedy yarn keep the waistcoat from being too dressy for today’s fashion and make the stockinette stitch more enjoyable to knit. The vertical edges of the body incorporate a bit of ribbing and attached 2-stitch I-cord to prevent curling. This same edging is worked at the finishing stage around the armholes, neckline, and waist in the main color. Ribbing is worked at the underarms and at the small of the back where an adjustable belt would be found on a sewn garment to provide a tailored fit without complicated shaping.
