Moorish Tiles Placemats

By Kevin Kosbab

Set your dinner table for faraway culinary adventures with an appliquéd tile mosaic peeking out from under the plates. The textured linen background suggests stucco walls where these tiles might be glimpsed by a sharp-eyed traveler.

Makes two placemats
— Main: 1 yd slubbed linen or linen
blend (or ½ yd linen plus ½ yd
coordinating backing), 40" wide
— Tile Appliqués: about 15 scraps of
printed cotton, each at least
3 ½" × 3 ½" (shown: teal and green
stone textures)
— Binding: 3/8 yd of 2 complementary
colors, 45" wide (shown: dark teal
and pine)

Other Supplies
— Template:
— Tile (A)
— Batting: two pieces of low-loft
batting, each 18" × 15"
— 1 yd of fusible web, 17" wide
— Nonstick pressing sheet
— Safety pins
— Coordinating threads for appliqué
— Optional: Open-toe sewing machine

— All seam allowances are ¼", unless
otherwise specified.

— Follow manufacturer’s instructions
for all fusibles.
— The open background of the samples
was left unquilted to allow the
linen’s natural texture to enhance
the architectural suggestion. If
you prefer a crisper look, fuse
lightweight interfacing to the wrong
side of the linen before assembling
the placemats or quilt outlined tile
shapes in the background to continue
the tile pattern from the appliqués.
— Linen tends to ravel, so the pieces
are cut slightly larger and then
trimmed to size before binding.
