These mittens follow the classic style of the two-color Selbu mittens of nineteenth-century Norway: a corrugated ribbing, large star motif (known in Norway as an "eight blade rose"), pointed tips, designated seam stitches, and a different small motif worked on the palm, thumb gussets, and thumb.
Finished Size: About 8" (20.5 cm) long from top of cuff to tip, with a 3" (7.5-cm) cuff, and about 8 1/2" (21.5 cm) circumference, measured above the thumb. Sized to fit a woman.
Yarn: Brown Sheep Nature Spun Sport Weight (100% wool; 184 yd [168 m]/50 g): #111 plumberry (dark brownish purple; MC), #102 eucalyptus (dusty blue), #522 nervous green (sage), #N94 Bev's bear (medium brown), #N93 latte (tan), #200 Bordeaux (wine), #101 burnt sienna (brick), and #N17 French clay (reddish orange), 1 ball each.
Yarn weight: #3 - Light
Gauge: 18 sts and 18 rnds = 2" (5 cm) in color work St st worked in the rnd on larger needles.
Needles: Size 1 (2.25 mm) and 2 (2.75 mm): set of 4 or 5 double-pointed (dpn). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain correct gauge.
Notions: Markers (m); stitch holders; tapestry needle.
