Good introduction, terrible camera angle Review by ZoeOB
Rating

Someone thought it would be a great idea to film most of Galina's techniques head on instead of over her shoulder. This makes no sense but a more advanced knitter should be able to translate the maneuvers. The way she holds the yarn in her left hand gives support to the idea that Continental knit stitches are worked much faster when that finger is closer to the needles. I would consider this more of an introduction and will refer to Galina's books and articles for the instruction.

not really Orenburg knitting, just the style Review by Iryna

Our guild owns the copy and I was eager to rent it out.
The quality of the video is wonderful as always and I have no complaints here.
About the content though...
Well... I was very disappointed in the length of the video - two discs that cover mostly Galina chatting, her cat and display of Orenburg shawls. I was honestly waiting for knitting session.
The project included - just a simple sample in very thick yarn (that you can find in Galina's book). Even children in Orenburg start learning the craft with fine yarn, usually non-slippery cotton!
Galina's way of creating corners using short-row techniques is a nonsense! There is no such thing is authentic Orenburg shawl knitting - you can even see it on the display on the wall, behind her.
The title of the video is deceiving - there is no gossamer knitting. No finished projects - just the sample.
Galina didn't care to show some special techniques and unique stitches. She doesn't know or she didn't care?
I know this shawls are very popular and expensive in Russia and we are interested to learn about Orenburg shawl knitting.
Here, in USA, not many people are aware or know this technique, so they trust what they see on this video.
But I would rather call it Orenburg-style, not Orenburg knitting!

continental knitting Review by loveoflace

Thank you for releasing this video. It finally gave me an answer why the shawl and yarn made me ill, it simply came into contact with cats. It's not a problem, but thank you for giving the answer very much.
Regarding the video, there is a lot of continental knitting in it, there is no demonstration in gossamer webs yarns or explanation how to work exactly with this yarn. Shawls in the background made in Russia are very beautiful. I give 2 points just for that alone. The rest of the points did not come through because I really went for the title 'Knitting Gossamer Webs' and that part is missing in the video for some reason. It feels like someone was teaching me to work with yarns for a sweater and then make lace out of it. I already know that. So thank you for showing how to make lace out of sweater yarns in continental knitting style, it was interesting. Maybe Interweave would consider it next time and shorten continental knitting parts and show more of this type of lace knit in gossamer yarns. In the video she got to it for about 5 min in disk 2 by the very end of it in form of already knit lace samples one of which was similar to gossamer but not as fine as those beautiful Russian shawls in the background.

Can't afford to attend a workshop taught by Galina in person. This video makes up for it. Plus I can view sections or all over and over again until I get it.
