Cotton was perhaps the most important fiber of the ancient world, clothing more people throughout history than any other. It remains one of the most important fibers today – think underwear and bluejeans! Sheets and towels! Yet cotton has been largely neglected by contemporary spinners in the developed world.  Stephenie Gaustad aims to change all that. In this engaging video, you’ll learn:

  • How to prepare cotton, from boll to batt
  • How to spin cotton with ease and efficiency on a wide range of tools, from tahkli to flyer wheel
  • How to boil off and set twist in preparation for weaving, knitting, or what have you

Along the way, you’ll be treated to fascinating historical asides, to inventive tricks for devising and adapting tools, and to an array of splendid made goods from socks to smocks to household cloths.

Great video for cotton spinners Review by Cherie

I thoroughly enjoyed this video. Great explanation on types of cotton, ginning and which tools are best to spin cotton and how to make yarn on each on. As I have two of the tools (Tahkli and Great Wheel) I am well on my way to making cotton yarn.

Beyond Wonderful Review by Karen
Rating

This is not a video on how to physically spin cotton, but more an educational video all about cotton and how to process it in to yarn. Stephanie is beyond excellent. She is such a wonderful teacher and presented the subject matter so well that it got me more excited to make cotton yarn. She has a calm presence about her yet teaches so well that everything she said was grains of wisdom on cotton and all it has to offer. Thanks you Stephanie(:
