The Fleece & Fiber Sourcebook:
More Than 200 Fibers, from Animal to Spun Yarn

by Deborah Robson & Carol Ekarius

The Fleece & Fiber Sourcebook is a reference book you will return to again and again as you grow as a fiber artist. This one-of-a-kind photographic encyclopedia features more than 200 animals and the fibers they produce.

It covers almost every sheep breed i
n the world—from the longwool breeds of the United Kingdom to the Tasmanian merino, the Navajo churro, the northern European Faroese, and dozens and dozens more. It also includes goats, camelids (such as alpacas, llamas, and vicunas), bison, horses, musk oxen, rabbits, and even dogs.

Each entry includes photographs of the featured animal; samples of its raw fleece, its cleaned fleece, and yarn spun from the fleece; and samples of the yarn knit and woven. You'll find everything you want to know about each animal and its fiber, including the fiber's color, density, strength, and staple length, and recommendations for processing and using it. This is the essential reference no fiber-lover can be without.

rare wools DVD

Handspinning Rare Wools:
How to Spin Them, Why We Should Care

workshop DVD with Deborah Robson

In Handspinning Rare Wools, Deborah Robson explores fiber from 38 rare and endangered breeds of sheep from Great Britain and North America. Her knowledge of their history and characteristics is deep, her stories are intriguing, and her passion for saving and savoring the basic materials of our craft is palpable.

In Handspinning Rare Wools, Robson covers the most interesting and vulnerable of Norther European short-tailed sheep, old British breeds, rare English longwools, classic English Down breeds, Welsh and Border breeds, American originals, and American feral and semi-ferals.

You’ll learn that washing, carding, combing, spinning, and finishing these fibers is a never-ending experiment filled with surprises. You’ll see the unexpected variety—from wool that feels like jute to wool that stretches and bounces back like tiny bungees. You’ll hear stories about specific sheep breeders who have made a difference—a hundred or three hundred years ago.

With Handspinning Rare Wools with Deborah Robson, you’ll have your ideas of fineness and softness and staple length turned on end.

Customer Reviews

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this bundle Review by Kristi

I have purchased a lot of weaving, spinning, and knitting products from interweave, but this bundle is my most beloved! The books are loaded with beautiful pictures of animals and fiber and are the perfect compliment to Deb's video. I've actually watched it twice already. So much interesting history, breed specific information, and functional guidance about how to use and prepare the fiber--I don't have enough good things to say. This would also make a great for my fiber-loving friends!
