Weaving with Novelty Yarn

with Tom Knisely

Many weavers have been taught that there are “weaving yarns” (the ones that come on cones), and then there are “novelty” knitting yarns that can’t be used on a loom.

In this video, master weaver, mythbuster, and yarn explorer Tom Knisely shows that weaving yarn doesn’t have to come on a cone, and that weaving with novelty yarns opens a whole new world of design possibilities for woven fabric.

You’ll learn:

  • How to tell which yarns are right for warp
  • How to pair novelty yarns with other yarns to enhance durability
  • Tricks for designing, warping, and weaving with delicate or textured yarns
  • How to repair a broken thread quickly and cleanly
  • How to finish novelty fabrics
  • The best hemstitching trick you’ve ever seen!

Tom has spent his teaching and weaving career in a yarn shop, experimenting with every kind of yarn there is, and now you can reap the riches of his vast experience, his weaving wisdom, and his ever-present sense of fun. With Tom at your side, every delicious yarn in your stash or your local yarn shop will become fertile ground for your weaving imagination.

I love Tom Knisely videos, including "Weaving with novelty Yarns" Review by Marilyn

Tom Knisely is the best weaving teacher I have ever encountered. He simplifies the weaving process for any level of weaver and I find him very easy to follow.

I have been spinning for over 30 tears and weaving for 8 years. I found so many helpful suggestions in this video, including:

1° easy method to weave from front to back without having to hold the cross in your hand

2° Easy way to wind mixed warps without cutting and tieing on each new color during winding the warp.

3° I also feel more secure to use a combination of different yarns from MY STASH in future weaving projects.

Whether you are a new or an intermediate weaver; I am sure you will find information that will be useful.

really great! Review by Mandi

I have been weaving for only 3 years. I have tried novelty yarns and made a great big mess. I have made big messes warping f2b and trying to "design at the warp". I have broken threads and was confused by diagrams in books to fix so instead, and this is terrible, I just tied them back together!
With this video, which I will watch over and over again, I have learned how to make better choices with the novelty yarns, combining with sturdier yarns to make it all work, how to actually warp f2b and design at the reed without making a huge mess, and how to fix broken warp threads, even if they are variegated!
The alternatives to tying on is also (to me) worth the price of the video. Books are great, but seeing all of these things walked through step by step makes a huge difference to my understanding!!!!
I am thrilled to have purchased a video that will help me again and again...until such time as I'm good enough to not need to watch it!

LOVED it Review by Jean

Yes, a good portion of it is more geared to a new weaver or someone who isn't a spinner, but I've been doing both for over 20 years and I loved it.
I especially love learning some new little tips and tricks in the warping process.
Tom Knisely always has little golden tidbits like this and he's just such a nice guy. Wish I lived near The Mannings. I'd take every class he offered.

Very little for the experienced weaver. Review by James

This video would put a new weaver with little/no experience in very good standing, as it covers a lot of basics like project planning and warping. It might make weaving more approachable to newbies since this video reinforces the idea that you don't need fancy cone yarn to weave, you can use store-bought knitting yarn as well.

However, experienced weavers can probably give it a miss - over half the video is about warping (a topic not specific to novelty yarn at all), as well as other basics like tabby and wet finishing.
