Wild Safari Masks

These wearable felt masks— crane, giraffe, and lion—take children on a wild safari adventure, allowing them to become the animals themselves. The masks are handsewn and finished with a pretty blanket stitch. Roar!


Fabric
Uganda Crane Mask
— 2 sheets (9" × 12") white felt
— 1 sheet (9" × 12") charcoal gray felt
— ? yd faux fur, black
— ? yd black fleece or felt for lining
 

 

Giraffe Mask
— 1 sheet (9" × 12") rust felt
— 2 sheets (9" × 12") ivory felt

 

Lion Mask
— 2 sheets (9" × 12") rust felt
— 1 sheet (9" × 12") light brown felt
— 1 scrap (2½" × 2½") dark brown felt

— Embroidery needle
— 1 yd ?" elastic
— ? yd fusible, heavyweight interfacing,
20” wide
— 12 yellow feathers, approximately
5" high (for Uganda Crane)
— Fiberfill (or small scraps of felt)
— Felt-tip pen, black
— Hot glue gun


Notes
— Seam allowance is ¼" for all pieces
sewn by machine.
— Follow manufacturer’s instructions
for all fusibles.
— Backstitch at the beginning and end
of every seam.

— All blanket stitches are sewn by hand
with two strands of embroidery floss,
unless otherwise noted.
— Knot your thread at the beginning
and end of every seam sewn with a
blanket stitch.


Finished Size
— Uganda Crane: 7½” × 7½” including
feathers
— Giraffe: 6½” × 7”
— Lion: 6¾” × 10”
Masks have elastic band and should fit
most sizes.
